Nerea Valles, pre-doctoral researcher of the Perinatology Group, awarded at the CGE Research Awards

The General Council of Nursing recognises the efforts of young researchers and professionals who defend their doctoral thesis with a special category, among other aspects.

Nerea Valles, Resident Nurse of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (Midwife) at the Hospital Universitario y Politécnico La Fe and pre-doctoral researcher of the Perinatology Research Group of the La Fe Research Institute (IIS La Fe), has received the award for best researcher at national level in the category Young Promises in Nursing Research of the II Research Awards of the General Nursing Council (CGE) with her work 'Efecto del pinzamiento tardío de cordón umbilical sobre la saturación de oxígeno y la frecuencia cardíaca en recién nacidos prematuros moderados'.

The award-winning project consists of a prospective observational study in which oxygen saturation and heart rate data will be collected in the first 10 minutes of 500 moderate and late preterm newborns and will be carried out in the Emergency-Observation-Paratory-Operative Theatre Unit of the Hospital La Fe.

The awards ceremony was held on 1 February and took place at the CGE headquarters in Madrid. From among the finalists, the jury of the awards, made up of ten nurses with a prestigious professional career in areas such as teaching, management, care and research, chose the six winners of the awards, which have a total prize of 55,000 euros. Among the evaluation criteria, the degree of originality and innovation of the project, its repercussion on health outcomes and impact on the population, as well as its scientific and technical quality were considered.

The CGE Research Awards

The awards were divided into two lines of action. The first consisted of grants for research projects aimed at achieving benefits and impact on health outcomes related to nursing practice in hospital, family and community settings and other professional areas. In addition to this, there was a specific award to promote research among younger nursing professionals, for which projects whose principal investigator was under 35 years of age were eligible, and another dedicated to nursing innovation. Finally, there was also a prize aimed at distinguishing the best doctoral thesis that has been read and defended in the last five years.
