The 2024 Open Day of Advanced Medical Imaging focused on Theragnostics, a "disruptive" synergy between Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.
The Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe hosted the 2024 Open Day of Advanced Medical Imaging (JAIMA), organized by the Clinical Area of Medical Imaging and in collaboration with the Biomedical Imaging Research Group of the La Fe Health Research Institute (IIS La Fe).
In this 2024 edition, the event focused on theragnostics, a "disruptive and revolutionary" synergy between Radiology and Nuclear Medicine for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, as highlighted by the promoter of the meeting, the Director of the Clinical Area of Medical Imaging at La Fe, Academician of the National Academy of Medicine and principal investigator of the Biomedical Imaging Research Group of IIS La Fe, Luis Martí-Bonmatí, and the expert in the field, nuclear medicine specialist and also member of the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain, José Luis Carreras Delgado.
According to experts in the field, theragnostics has already been approved for certain tumors (such as thyroid and neuroendocrine tumors) and is being tested for others. In fact, this synergy between disciplines allows the use of radiopharmaceuticals that specifically target certain tumor receptors, both for diagnosis and treatment. These radiopharmaceuticals enable diagnostic imaging that shows the expression of specific receptors throughout the tumor burden, and later allows for the administration of a targeted treatment, thus constituting a personalized and precision oncological treatment.
All specialists agreed that the ultimate goal is to precisely locate the tumors, characterize them molecularly, design tailor-made treatments, optimize clinical outcomes, and reduce undesirable side effects.
The event was attended by the Director General of Research and Innovation of the Health Department, Mariola Penadés; the Medical Director of the Valencia La Fe Health Department, Salomé Matoses; and the Scientific Director of the La Fe Health Research Institute, Guillermo Sanz.
The event concluded with an emotional recognition of Dr. José Luis Carreras, presented by Maximiliano Lloret, who had been the predecessor of Dr. Martí-Bonmatí for many years as Head of the Radiology Department at La Fe.
