IIS La Fe launches the Senior Science workshop series to promote science outreach among people over 65

The Health Research Institute La Fe (IIS La Fe) continues to promote the 1st edition of the activity programme Your Hospital Investigates - Science Up Close, a project aimed at bringing science closer to audiences that are not usually involved in science communication initiatives.

With the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), the programme pays special attention to underrepresented groups, such as people over the age of 65.

As part of this initiative, IIS La Fe has organised the Sénior Science workshop series, which will take place on May 13, 20, and 27. It is designed to spark scientific interest in people with little prior exposure to science, promoting active ageing and stimulating scientific curiosity.

Scheduled workshops:

The workshop series, aimed at people over 65, will cover current topics in science and health, presented in an accessible and engaging format. The scheduled workshops are:

  • 13/05: Resistant microbes and polluted air: an invisible threat. Severe Infection Research Group. This workshop will explore how resistant microbes are changing medicine and how air quality can affect our health.

  • 20/05: Animal models and their crucial role in medical research. Experimental Surgery and Animal Models Platform (PCEMA) at IIS La Fe. This session will explain the use of animal models in medical research, their impact on the development of new treatments, and the ethical considerations involved.

  • 27/05: Endocrine disruptors: impact on health and how to protect ourselves. Experimental Hepatology Unit. This workshop will focus on the effects of endocrine disruptors on hormonal health and how participants can reduce their exposure to these chemicals in everyday life.

Through these sessions, participants will explore fundamental scientific concepts, debunk common myths, and gain practical tools to make informed decisions that support their well-being.

An inclusive and participatory approach

The Senior Science series is just one of the many activities that the Your Hospital Investigates - Science Up Close programme is carrying out to promote scientific knowledge among people of different ages and abilities. In addition to the workshops for seniors, the programme includes initiatives such as workshops for visually impaired students, in collaboration with ONCE, and participatory meetings between researchers and patients.

The project also reinforces IIS La Fe's commitment to science communication and training, with initiatives such as the Share Your Science events, designed to train researchers in public engagement.

Through this workshop series and related initiatives, IIS La Fe continues to make science more accessible and inclusive, offering society a closer, more practical understanding of scientific and medical advancements that impact our lives.
